This fabulous quality figured walnut chest, would have been made in one of the best workshops of the day. (probably by Holland & sons.)
Everything about this chest of drawers points to the best quality of craftsmanship and choice of materials used. Whether you look at the original finely turned walnut knob handles, hand turned on a lathe in a hard walnut, the drawer linings , in fine mahogany or the wonderful figured walnut that is deep in colour.
Around the edges of the 4 rows of gently graduating drawers, is a fine applied moulding.
Imagine the amount of clothes and bedding you could get into this fine chest, as there is no wasted space at all.
Walnut chest of drawers of this period are pretty scarce, this fantastic example, would originally have been very high priced and in the home of the professional classes or gentry.
We have restored and re-polished this chest in the traditional manner, by our own craftsmen, taking care and getting pleasure as they bring this back to its original glory.
This Victorian walnut chest was first made circa 1870, when many of the worlds citizens would have been mourning the death of Charles Dickens.
Also at this time in Englands history,
The Married Womens Property Act had been passed, allowing for wives to own property of their own.
British Red Cross was established as the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War.
The General Post office had taken over the Private Telegraph companies.
This superb chest of drawers, would have also seen , the invention of the car and then the landing of man on the moon, and through to the new electronic revolution of the 21st century.
