Here we have this Victorian brass bound military chest that would have been used by a British officer to transport his uniforms and valuables around the Empire. NOW SOLD
This lovely chest is made of teak, a timber that is able to stand up to the rigours of the journeys the chest would have to be go through in its life.
The flush brass corners were not only for decorative purposes, but more importantly they were inset to give strength and protection while this was being loaded and unloaded from pack horses, camels, wagons, and sailing ships. Each brass strap has been screwed into place which was a more expensive and quality feature. To each end you have a magnificent cast brass flush fitted carrying handles.
Teak is a strong hardwood and is also resistant to seawater, this is especially useful as it would have been lashed to the deck of ships and beasts of burden on its journeys around the world.
The lid opens to real an open space for storage, with a fitted cupboard to one end.
These chests are fantastic and can be used in many areas of the home, they can be used especially as coffee tables.
