Victorian mahogany pedestal desk
This Victorian mahogany pedestal desk was made circa 1870. NOW SOLD
It is inverted breakfront shape, where the centre drawer of the desk above the kneehole breaks inwards to allow you to sit closer to work.
The pedestal desk is fitted the usual combination of 3 drawers in the top section and a further 3 graduated drawers in each pedestal. Each drawer has its original finely turned knob handles. The rear of the desk is finished so that it can be set in the middle of a room or office if required, the back has attractive panels.
The top is fitted an inset gilt tooled leather writing surface. These are very durable and good to work on.
A genuine Victorian desk were made in 3 parts (the top and pair of pedestals) this allows for it to be transported to and around your office or home. If the desk is NOT in 3 pieces, I would be cautious that it started life as a dressing table or washstand and had been adapted for gain.
It has the makers/retailers stamp of Graygoose Gt. Queens Street. I have not been able to find any records of this business and so suggest whilst they made the high-quality products the business did not last many years. Sometimes a good cabinetmaker would leave a company of Gillows, Shoolbread or Hollands stature and try to set up themselves.
