This Victorian inlaid rosewood desk by James Shoolbred was made circa 1880.
James Shoolbred were known to supply some of the finest furniture of the period, even gaining a Royal Warrant in the mid 1880’s.
It is of exhibition quality and would have been a prestige order made in their workshops, and to be sold in their department store in Tottenham Court Road. I wouldn’t be surprised if this desk was part of the opening exhibition when this landmark store first opened in the 1880’s.
The rosewood desk has the original red leather writing surface in front of the magnificent superstructure at the rear. The cupboards at each end of the top with the finest ivory inlays (we have gained the licence to sell this with the ivory inlaid and can be provided )and boxwood sprays. The top of the cupboards has ¾ brass galleries.
The base with a good wide concave drawer above the kneehole and banks of drawers that are serpentine shaped to each side, with tapering legs onto castors under. All smothered in wonderful inlays as well as the cupboards.
