George I small walnut bureau

This George I walnut bureau is of a lovely rare small size.
The sloping fall that has an applied moulding so that you can place a book on to read, opens to reveal an area for working as well as drawers and pigeon holes.
Under the fall is the very rare feature of a slide, that pulls forward to provide another working surface.
The slide is above the 4 graduated drawers, fitted with brass swing handles and engraved back plates.
The cabinetmaker would have spent much time selecting the veneers to do this job. The figuring and life in the walnut is striking.
This wonderful bureau stands on the usual bracket feet you expect in this period.

They no doubt would have marvelled at the total eclipse that fell on London, the reports of the Jacobite rebellion and the general upheaval of that period. They would have read about the trial in Spanish Town , Jamaica, of Pirate Calico Jack Rackham who was hanged 2 days later.
It was also the time of the South Sea bubble, where many people lost fortunes on the shares of this company.
