This Edwardian inlaid rosewood envelope card table was made circa 1900. NOW SOLD
The envelope card table is of a square shape and fitted a drawer.
The top that has wonderful inlays in ivorine and box wood, that was inked by hand to give a definition, the designs being foliate with a basket of fruit amongst the fine tendrils.
There is a square tapering leg with spade feet to each corner that end with the high-quality castors and brass squares. The legs are inlaid with stringing. The legs are joined by scissor stretchers.
The 4 flaps open to reveal the baize playing area. These tables have the quirky feature that when you swivel the top, a button pushes from under the top to lift one corner so that you can open the rest of the corners with ease.
The drawer that is lined in fine cigar box mahogany is stamped John Finch and Co, London.
John Finch worked as a departmental manager for Messrs. W. & J. R. Hunter. On their retirement in 1879 he opened his own business at 45 City Road. An article in The Furniture Gazette on 5 July 1879 said the new establishment would operate on a cash basis and the furniture would be designed by W. Fairbanks for ‘guaranteed good, artistic style’. This business only ran for 26 years and so his items are not prolific but judging by this superb example, his items can be compared to Maple & co, James Shoolbred, Edwards & Roberts and the other celebrated top companies of the day.
Imagine this showpiece card table in your home and the pleasure it will give as you open this up to use with your family and friends, an event in itself.
