Colonial hardwood merchants chest

Colonial hardwood merchants chest

This Antique Colonial merchant chest was first crafted in the first half of the 19thc. using teak.

This chest was originally made for a merchant, to be used as a secure chest for transporting valuables, on the arduous journeys around India.

These chests make superb coffee tables as well as conversation pieces. It can’t fail to spark your imagination about the stories this could tell of its perilous travels either by cart, wagon, elephant, or sailing ship.

The top is boarded, joined by blacksmith made iron protection straps of the very interesting and appealing criss-cross strapping design. The lid opens on hinges to reveal an open storage area.

The exterior has the blacksmith made long iron strap corners.

This lovely trunk is finished all the way around and so can be used away from the wall. These are especially good as interesting coffee tables, making a conservation piece.

Imagine the pleasure you will have with ownership of this piece of history, and the conversations you can have as you all wonder at the tales it would give.

“There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man’s lawful prey.”

― John Ruskin
