This oak tallboy chest was made in the early part of the 20th. century, in a very accomplished workshop.

Tallboy’s are also know as chests on chests, which is the more formal name of this type of chest of multi drawers.

Georgian tallboys were always made in 2 sections, like this example, as time went on they got even smaller, the cabinet makers were looking to make cheaper versions and they started to be made in one piece.

The top section is fitted a pair of small drawers below the solid oak top, and a further 3 graduated drawers under.

The base section with a brushing slide, that pulls forward with 2 brass drop handles, above the 3 graduated drawers below.

This oak tallboy stands on bracket feet.

This oak tallboy chest has all its original turned knob handles, and the original brass plate escutcheons.

The brushing slide on tallboys and chests were said to be there for the valets to brush gentlemen’s trousers and suits before their use.

We have re-polished this oak tallboy in our own workshops, and by hand in the traditional manner. No lacquers or sprays are used.

This is finished with wax and is of a lovely colour.
