This Large Victorian camphorwood campaign trunk was made circa 1880.
It would have been purchased by a British officer who was in service in the Far East.
These were made of camphorwood, a timber that gives off a beautiful perfume, we adore but the insects and moths avoid. This meant the uniforms would not get eaten by the insects when the officer was stationed in the East.
The trunk has the ring handle that that you use open to reveal full storage inside.
The exterior has brass straps on the corners to protect the chest as it was loaded onto wagons, carts, and ships as it was taken to different campaigns across the world.
To each end is a brass carrying handle to allow ease of moving this wonderful piece around,
These camphorwood campaign trunks make great coffee tables and conversation pieces. They also can be used as great storage at the end of a bed or in an alcove or bay window.
It is always great when families come into my shop and a piece like this sparks people’s imaginations as to what campaigns these have been through. The thoughts of it being manhandled off wagons in remote outposts in India or other parts of the long-gone British Empire.

“There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man’s lawful prey.”
