Victorian 1880’s mahogany extending dining table

Victorian 1880’s mahogany extending dining table  NOW SOLD
This Victorian 1880’s mahogany extending dining table was made in a top workshop of the period to be sold in one of the prestige high street retailers.
Here we have this extending dining table that takes 2 extra leaves.
This dining table, made circa 1880, winds out on a telescopic action. This allows the extra leaves to be added for use.
You may use this table with any combination of leaves. You may want to use it closed without leaves or add one leaf for a larger party or both leaves set in to allow you to seat 10 or more.
This solid mahogany table has rounded corners and a finely turned mahogany leg to each corner.
Each leg has the original china wheel castor and brass collar.
Imagine sitting and entertaining with your friends and family at this dining table.
Having a leg to each corner, makes the table very stable during use.
The dining table extends by using a winding handle, that when turned, opens the table out very easily, on a patented telescopic spiral worm.
When this table was first made, the owners may well have sat around the table, horrified about the military disaster at Isandlwana during the Anglo-Zulu war, and then uplifted by the heroic defence of Rorke’s Drift in the following days.
They may have discussed a visit to London to watch the first performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and excited chatter of visiting the large new departmental shopping stores that were springing up.
Many other topics would have been debated as families sat around this dining table as time moved on. Can you imagine the excited chatter as Man took his first flight, the celebrations of the start of the 20th century, the coronation of Edward VII after the death of Queen Victoria and the looming of the First World War.
This dining table is now ready to start its new life with you and be there for generations to come.
