Sheraton inlaid mahogany card table
This Sheraton inlaid mahogany card table was made circa 1810
The table is of rectangular form with softly rounding corners. It stands on 4 tapering legs with box stringing and gaiters of Satinwood above the feet.
The pair of back legs swing out to provide support for the top once it has folded open to serve as a gaming table. The gaming surface is green baize, with a fine satinwood cross banded border.
The top with a central semi-circle of satinwood with strips of mahogany radiating to the good wide satinwood and kingwood cross banded edge.
The frieze in mahogany with box wood stringing and a central plaque of satinwood with a diamond shaped panel of amboyna.
The edge of the top with kingwood banding.
Sheraton gave his name to a style of furniture characterized by a feminine refinement of late Georgian styles and became a source of inspiration behind the furniture of the late 18th century.
