They would have been made for an important home, and the sumptuous design was bound to impress any visitors. Especially as these were normally set in the hall or drawing rooms of a home.

Andre Charles Boulle was “the most remarkable of all French cabinetmakers”. After his death and the centuries following his name and that of his family has been given to the art of inlaying brass, sometimes pewter into tortoiseshell laid on ebony.

You will see examples of this work in stately homes and Palaces around the world.
