Large Victorian camphorwood ottoman

Large Victorian camphorwood ottoman

This Large Victorian camphorwood trunk would have been made circa 1870. NOW SOLD

Originally, this antique trunk was made to transport an officer’s uniforms, and personal effects around the British Empire.

The reason this was made of camphor wood, (apart from there being a plentiful supply of this wood) was to keep moths and insects away from the cloth carried inside.

The trunk has brass corners, which were put into the frame to help the chest withstand the rigours of being transported around the world.

We have used our own craftsmen to upholster and deep button the top in fine antiqued leather.

The lid opens to reveal a full storage area, including a small lidded compartment that was used for small valuables. Perhaps the officers gold pocket watch and chain would be stored here, diaries and letters from his loved ones and any other precious items that needed to be cared for during a journey.

As you lift the lid by the brass loop handle your senses are filled with the delicate perfume of the Camphor wood.

Imagine if this chest could tell the stories of the journeys and adventures it has been through, as it was transported around the North West frontier and other parts of the British Empire.

This Camphorwood chest can be used in many places around your home. It can be used as a hall-seat, imagine sitting on it as you slip on your shoes. In a bedroom at the end of the bed or in a bay. It would also be a fantastic coffee table or just as occasional seating in a bay window of a lounge or drawing room.

This Victorian brass bound leather ottoman cannot be purchased elsewhere, it is unique to us.

It comes with the Hingstons Antiques Brand guarantee, the chest has been chosen carefully and then restored before it can enter into our stock to offer to you.
