George III walnut longcase clock by Bentley London

James Bentley is listed in Baillie ‘watchmakers and clockmakers of the World’ as working in London in 1765.

Only a person of extreme wealth would been able to afford a clock of this stature and quality. It would be wonderful to know where this first graced a home, it would have been a most important home probably in the wealthiest part of London.

This London made clock stands majestically in its original burr walnut case, fitted the long-crossbanded, herring bone strung arched door and the pagoda hood surmounted by the cast brass eagle and ball finials. The pagoda with delicate blind fret. The trunk stands on the box base with a stepped plinth.

An original movement in a walnut case is rare, as over the centuries clock movements have been changed to suit different circumstances, sometimes it was cheaper to replace than repair, it also may have been that an owner wished to have a local clockmakers movement in their case.

It has a 12ins brass dial calendar aperture also with a strike silent option. Dolphin spandrels with a silvered chapter ring, a matt gilt centre and a makers’ nameplate. The 5-pillar movement with anchor escapement.

Imagine owning this most desirable longcase clock and the pleasure it will give you.
