The Chalke Valley Cabinet
Here we have to offer you, this magnificent display cabinet made of mahogany, with satinwood and London Plane inlaid panels.
This fine cabinet would have been in one of the finest workshops of the period. Frustratingly, there are no numbers or retailers labels to pin down exactly where this was made, but was probably retailed by Liberty & co.
The cabinet of canted shape, with a central door that has a large copper fretted decorative panel to the top, and with 3 fixed display green velvet lined surfaces inside. To each side the is a further door that also has the 3 fixed shelves for display.
The cabinet furniture throughout is very stylish and evocative of this unique period in time.
The Art Nouveau period was a short period in our history, starting c.1895 and ending about 15 years later. Hence the rarity of spectacular items like the cabinet we offer you here.
This piece would have been purchased in store and then sent by the retailers own transport. We take for granted how easy moving large of items of furniture is now, but imagine the trouble and time it would have taken when this cabinet was first to be delivered. This Art Nouveau cabinet probably would have been transported by a large removal wagon drawn by horses.
