Antique iron bound merchant chest
This Antique Colonial merchant chest was made in the early 19thc. for a wealthy merchant or a family of great importance. NOW SOLD
Made of Jackfruit, a timber of the colour of walnut also like teak, chosen that it was strong and durable to survive the rigours of the perilous journeys the owners of this magnificent chest had to take. It was made to store valuables, gold, silver, silks, and other precious items.
The chest is a rectangular shape with a lifting lid that opens to reveal a full area for storage.
The outside has lovely iron decorative straps and a most wonderful lock plate with hasp (not working) that were secured to the chest not only for decoration, but also to provide strength and protection as it was hauled around on the wagons and sailing ships as it was transported.
This will make a wonderful coffee table, that will not only look fantastic, an interesting conversation piece, also providing valuable storage. It wouldn’t be suitable as a toy box as the lid is extremely heavy to lift.
